A Candid Interview With Kamal Upadhyay | Author Of ILU

I was remembering the moments of interviewing Kamal Upadhyay a while ago. It was indeed a nice experience we’ve had when we got a chance to have a bilingual author interview with him. It was in the context of his book – Lankapati Ka Loktantra – a political satire which is relevant in current times.

After that book, we’ve read his book Hatya. Hatya is a gripping short thriller. And, now he came up with – Ilu – a short EBook primarily written for children. Reading it is a nice experience. Here is our unbiased review for the same.

After reading ILU, we’ve thought of having another short author interview with Kamal Upadhyay in the context of the same. As he is a simple happy-go-lucky person, the things worked out as expected. It was a candid conversation. The following line remained with us as the summary of the interview:

Every character of the Book has some or other side of mine.

I think it would be an interesting experience to read his book by keeping these expressions in front of you. You shall be able to relate different expressions with different scenes or moods :).

It’s almost impossible for me to hit writer’s block because I write in stolen hours.

मेरा #WA स्टेटस आपके सवाल का जवाब है।

कभी – कभी मुझे लगता है कि दिन तीस – बत्तीस घण्टे का होना चाहिए। समय की कमी के चलते ही आप के भेजे सवालों के जवाब कई दिनों के बाद इतनी देरी से दे रहा हूँ और यदि आप ने नोटिस किया होगा तो ट्विटर पर मेरी उपस्थित पहले के मुकाबले बहुत कम हो चुकी है।

Sometimes I think that the day should be thirty-two hours! Due to lack of time, I am answering even the questions by you after so many days and if you would have noticed, my presence on Twitter has become much less than before.

मेरी बाबा (बिटिया) के जन्म के बाद मुझे ऐसा लगा कि मैं जो लिखता हूँ उसे समझने के लिए बाबा को बहुत साल लगेंगे, ऐसे में मुझे कुछ ऐसा लिखना चाहिए जो मैं उसे पढ़कर सुना सकूँ। बस वहीं से मैंने ईलू और चीनो के किरदार का सृजन किया और बाप – बेटी के रिश्तों को ध्यान में रखते हुए ईलू को लिखना शुरू कर दिया। पिछले साल जब मैंने किताब का पहला ड्राफ्ट पूरा किया तब कुछ और व्यस्तताओं के कारण मैं किताब को प्रकाशित नहीं कर पाया और इस साल समय निकालकर मैंने यह काम कर दिया।

After the birth of my Baba (daughter), I felt that it would take many years for Baba to understand what I write, so I should write something that I can read to her. Just from that thought, I created the character of ईलू and चीनो and started writing ईलू (story) keeping in mind the father-daughter relationship. Last year, when I completed the first draft of the book, due to some busy schedules, I was not able to publish the book and this year I took the time to do it.

मुझे मुख्य किरदार का नाम ‘ई’ अक्षर से चाहिए था। अचानक से मुझे ‘ईलू’ नाम हिट हुआ, जिसका फुल फॉर्म ‘आई लव यू’ है। जो सौदागर फ़िल्म का मशहूर गीत भी है।

चीनो और टीनू का नाम स्वयं ही दिमाग में उपज आया। मार्लो का नाम उसके मसखरे अंदाज के कारण रखा, वो कोई बदमाश लड़के कहते हैं ना, मुझे मार लो। बाकी के किरदार को उनके अंग्रेजी नामों के हिसाब से रख दिया, जैसे की काईट को किट्टो और पैरोट को पैरिटो।

I wanted the main character’s name with the letter ‘ई’. Suddenly I got the name ‘ईलू’, whose full form is ‘I love you’. Which is also a famous song from the movie Saudagar.

The names of चीनो and टीनू came to mind reflectively. मार्लो was named so because of his funny style. You might have seen some badass boys say sometimes “(if that is the case then) kill me”. The rest of the characters were named according to their English names, such as Kite to किट्टो and Parrot to पैरिटो.

ईलू का किरदार पूर्णतः मेरी बाबा से प्रेरित है। बाकी के किरदारों ईलू के किरदार के हिसाब से गढ़े गए हैं।

ईलू’s character is completely inspired by my daughter. The rest of the characters are composed according to the character of ईलू.

अभी तक की मेरी सभी प्रकाशित किताबों में ‘ईलू’ का कवर मुझे सबसे अधिक प्रिय है। कवर के डिज़ाइनर चेतन अड़लक को मैं तहे दिल से धन्यवाद देता हूँ।

जिन्होंने इसके पहले पुरानीबस्ती का लोगो और थीम पेज भी डिज़ाइन किया है और लंकापति का लोकतंत्र में उनके कुछ स्केच भी हैं।

ईलू की कवर डिज़ाइन के लिए मैंने चेतन को कहानी का संक्षिप्त वर्णन सुनाया था और उन्हें बताया कि मुझे एक चिड़िया चाहिए, जो हवाई चश्मा पहने हुए हो और बगल में एक हैलीकॉप्टर दुर्घटनाग्रस्त पड़ा हो। उसके बाद का सारा काम चेतन ने लाजवाब तरीके से किया।

जब चेतन ने किताब को प्रकाशित होने के बाद पढ़ा तो वो प्रसन्न हो गए, शायद वो मुझसे इस तरह की कहानी की उम्मीद नहीं कर रहें थे। प्रसन्नता में उन्होंने किताब के पुराने कवर को नए रंगों से भर दिया और कवर को 3D इफ़ेक्ट दिया। मैं इस बात से प्रसन्न हूँ कि ईलू की कहानी के साथ – साथ लोग कवर की भी तारीफ कर रहें हैं।

Of all my published books to date, the cover of ‘ईलू’ is the one I love the most. I wholeheartedly thank Chetan Adlak, the designer of the cover. Who has also designed the old logo and theme page before it and has some sketches of “Lankapati Ka Loktantra”.

For ईलू’s cover design, I gave Chetan a brief description of the story and told him that I needed a bird, wearing aerial glasses, and a helicopter crashed on the side. Chetan did all the work that followed quite fantastically.

When Chetan read the book after it was published, he was pleased, perhaps he was not expecting such a story from me. Pleased, he filled the old cover of the book with new colors and gave the cover a 3D effect. I am happy that along with the story of ईलू, people are praising the cover as well.

ईलू की यात्रा हमें साहस, संघर्ष और कभी ना हार मानने के लिए प्रेरित करती है। और साथ ही दया भावना और समाज कल्याण के लिए प्रेरित करती है। दूसरी तरफ इसके हर किरदार का कोई ना कोई पहलू मुझसे जुड़ा है फिर चाहे वो कपिलो का अभिमानी होना ही क्यों ना हो।

The journey of ईलू inspires us to have courage, willingness to do hard work and never give up. And at the same time, it inspires us to have kindness and the spirit of social welfare. On the other hand, some aspect of each of its characters is associated with me, even if it is Kapilo’s arrogance.

मैंने जब ईलू की कहानी को सोचा था, उस समय मैं एक फ़िल्म प्रोजेक्ट पर काम कर रहा था और अपनी स्क्रीनराइटिंग को निखारने के लिए मैंने ईलू का पहला ड्राफ्ट स्क्रीनप्ले फॉरमैट में लिखा। स्क्रीनप्ले वाली कहानी तीन हिस्सों में है। जिसमें से एक हिस्सा मैंने यहाँ किताब के रूप में प्रकाशित किया है। और बाकी के दो हिस्से प्री इकव्वल के रूप में अगले दो साल में प्रकाशित होंगे।

मैं बिल्कुल चाहता हूँ कि ईलू के ऊपर फ़िल्म या कार्टून सीरिज़ बनें और मुझे पूरी उम्मीद है कि ऐसा जरूर होगा।

I was working on a film project when I thought of ईलू’s story. To improve my screenwriting, I wrote the first draft of ईलू in a screenplay format. The screenplay is actually in three parts. One part of that I have published here in the form of this book. The remaining two parts will be published in the next two years gradually.

I absolutely want a film or cartoon series to be made over ईलू and I sincerely hope that it will happen.

जगरनॉट के साथ इस किताब का कोई करार नहीं हुआ है। इस किताब के सारे राइट्स मेरे पास हैं। किताब फिलहाल सिर्फ किंडल एक्सक्लुसिव रहेगी। और साथ ही मैं अपने पाठक मित्रों को यह भी बताना चाहता हूँ कि लंकापति का लोकतंत्र के प्रिंट राइट्स मेरे पास आ गए हैं और जैसे ही मैं किताब का नया संस्करण पूरा कर लुंगा, किताब आपके पास नए रूप में उपलब्ध होगी।

There is no agreement of this book with Juggernaut. I have all the rights to this book. The book will remain Kindle exclusive. And at the same time, I want to tell my reader friends that the print rights of “Lankapati Ka Loktantra” are also retained by me. The book will be available to you as soon as I complete the new edition of the book.

मैंने अभी तक जो भी लिखा है उसका 95% मुंबई लोकल में बैठकर या खड़े होकर लिखा है। मैंने तो एक फ़िल्म का पूरा डायलॉग मुंबई लोकल में लिखा है। इसलिए मेरी लिए मुंबई लोकल की यात्रा बहुत जरूरी है। सही – सही कहूँ तो उस भीड़ में ही मुझे वो तन्हाई मिलती है, जहाँ उंगलियां मोबाइल पर कहानी धड़ाधड़ टाइप करने लगती हैं।

95% of what I have written so far has been written by sitting or standing in Mumbai local! I have written the entire dialogue of a film in Mumbai Local! That is why it is very important for me to travel through Mumbai Local. Frankly, it is the only place where I get the loneliness in that crowd, where fingers start typing the story on mobile.

मुंबई लोकल के अंदर इंसानों के लिए जगह बनाना मुश्किल है तो कलम और कागज की जगह बनना तो नामुमकिन है। मैं पहला ड्राफ्ट मोबाइल पर ही लिखता हूँ। ड्राफ्ट एडिट करने के लिए मैं लैपटॉप का प्रयोग करता हूँ और फाइनल प्रूफ रीड पुनः मोबाइल पर करता हूँ। आजकल एक एप्पल आईपैड लेने की सोच रहा हूँ जो लाख रुपए का है लेकिन फिलहाल कोई किडनी खरीदनेवाले नहीं मिल रहा है 🙂 🙂 .

It is difficult to create space for humans inside Mumbai Local, so it is impossible to create a place of pen and paper. I write the first draft on mobile. I use the laptop to edit the draft and do the final proofread again on mobile. Nowadays I am thinking of getting an Apple iPad which is worth lakhs of rupees. But currently, I am unable to find any buyer for my kidneys 🙂 🙂 .

एक साल पहले जब मैंने ईलू का पहला ड्राफ्ट पूरा किया तो व्यस्त होने के अलावा मैंने यह सोचकर उसे अमेज़ॉन कॉन्टेस्ट में नहीं डाला कि अब मैं लेखक बन गया हूँ, फ़िल्म लिख रहा हूँ तो मैं कॉन्टेस्ट में किताब क्यों प्रकाशित करूँ? लेकिन अब मुझे चीनो की वो बात याद आती हैं जो उसने ईलू से कहा था – आत्मविश्वास अच्छा है ईलू लेकिन अतिआत्मविश्वास हानि पहुँचा सकता है।

A year ago when I finished the first draft of ईलू, I did not put it in the Amazon Contest, apart from being busy, thinking that I have become a writer, I am writing a film, so why should I publish a book in the Contest? But now I remember what चीनो said to ईलू

Confidence is good ईलू but overconfidence can harm.

सोशल मीडिया पर बहुत से लोग एक शिकायत बार – बार करतें हैं। जो आपने भी ईलू की समीक्षा के समय जिक्र में लाया कि मेरा ब्लॉग अब बहुत अधिक एक्टिव नहीं है। मैं अपने सभी पाठक मित्रों से इस बात के लिए क्षमा चाहता हूँ। किताब के अलावा कई अन्य तरह के राइटिंग प्रोजेक्टों में व्यस्त होने के कारण मुझे अब व्यंग्य पोस्ट लिखने का समय नहीं मिल पाता। यहाँ तक कि मैं नवभारत टाइम्स के हवाबाज़ी में भी समय की कमी के चलते आर्टिकल नहीं दे पाता तो मुझे क्षमा करें।
